How to Tame Pets as a Hunter in WoW Classic?
To tame a pet as a Hunter in WoW Classic you need to reach level 10. After reaching level 10 you get a quest from your Hunter trainer. This starts a quest chain that sends you to tame different pets. After completing all the steps, you learn the ability Tame Beast.
The best practice to tame a beast is to activate Aspect of the Monkey. Then drop a Freezing Trap at your feet and cast Tame Beast on the beast you’d like to tame. The beast will attack you while you’re trying to tame it. The Freezing Trap will not last long enough but helps to reduce the damage.
What is the Best Hunter Pet in SoD?
The best pets for melee Hunters in Season of Discovery are Cats with an attack speed of 2.0. You want to teach your pet the abilities Claw (Rank 6) and Bite (Rank 6), to maximize the DPS of your pet.
For ranged Hunters Cats with an attack speed of 1.2 are optimal.
For PvP you’d want a cat with a fast attack speed. Broken Tooth has the fastest attack speed in the game. It has a 1.0 attack speed. Starving Mountain Lion is an alternative with an attack speed of 1.2. It is easier to find and tame than Broken Tooth. But Broken Tooth is very hard to find and tame. With the instant spells in SoD, Broken Tooth is less important than it was in Classic.
In Phase 1 the Wind Serpent was a strong contender. In Phase 2 there is no new rank of Lightning Breath available. For this reason, the Wind Serpent is less viable in Phase 2. In Phase 3 a new rank of Lightning Breath will be available again.
Where to Find the Best Cat in SoD?
To find the best Cat in Season of Discovery, you want to tame a Ghost Saber, Broken Tooth, or Starving Mountain Lion.
- Ghost Saber can be found in Darkshore. The cat has an attack speed of 2.0 and is the best bet for Hunters while melee weaving. You need to interact with Cat Figurines to summon Ghost Saber.
- Broken Tooth can be found in the northern parts of Badlands, where you walk into Loch Modan. Broken Tooth is a rare pet and has a big area where he roams. This makes him difficult to tame.
- Starving Mountain Lion can be found in Hillsbrad Foothills and has an attack speed of 1.2. It’s a good interim pet for PvP if you can’t tame Broken Tooth yet.
For Hunters that play ranged specs and do not melee weave in PvE, all cats are equally good. In the following screenshots, you can see the locations of the two Phase 1 cats:
Raluk has the same attack speed as Starving Mountain Lion and can be used as well. As a Orc or Troll, you might have tamed Raluk in Durotar to get your Rune of Flanking.

What are the Best Pet Skills in Phase 2 of WoW SoD?
The best skills to use on your pet are Claw (rank 6) and Bite (rank 6). To teach these skills to your pet, you need to learn them first. This is how you learn them:
- Learn rank 6 of Claw by taming a Scorpid Hunter in the northeast of Tanaris. After taming it, attack enemies and make sure that your pet is using Claw. Do this, until you learn Claw.
- Learn rank 6 of Bite by taming a Deathstrike Tarantula in the southeast of Swamp of Sorrows or a Longtooth Runner in the east of Feralas. After taming it, attack enemies and make sure your pet is using Bite. Do this, until you learn Bite.
To check what abilities you’ve learned, use the spell Beast Training. After you’ve learned the spells, you can abandon the pet.
