Jake from State Farm, a cute Labrador retriever who was found wandering around Waco, Texas with a large mass on the side of his neck that was bigger than his head, is now feeling much better after a team of veterinarians at Texas A M helped him. After Long Way Home Adoptables rescued Jake, he was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, a tumor of the salivary gland, and the veterinarians at Texas A M performed surgery to remove the mass, which had spread from the gland up to his ear. Dr. Vanna Dickerson, a VMBS assistant professor, said that cancer of the salivary glands is rare, and it’s uncommon for it to get as advanced as it was in Jake’s case. Now that the mass has been removed, Jake is enjoying his new spring in his step.
Long Way Home, a school for sustainable architecture and construction in San Diego, recently threw a party for Jake, a rescue dog who had been cancer-free for a year. Jake had undergone surgery to remove a tumor that was pressing against his trachea and esophagus. The veterinary specialists decided to perform a palliative procedure, as it was not possible to remove the entire tumor due to its size. However, the surgery was successful in extending Jake’s life and making him more comfortable. The operation was partially funded by generous donors who had read Jake’s story on social media. Long Way Home’s executive director, April Plemons, said that the aim of the surgery was to provide Jake with a better quality of life for as long as possible.
