ALEXANDRIA, Ky. (WXIX) – A Northern Kentucky man claims his neighbor has been cited for cruelty to animals after he says the neighbor shot and killed three of his dogs.
David Schneider says he was walking his 100-acre property in California, Kentucky, with his beagles on Friday when they took off after a rabbit.
“Next thing I know I hear BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG and I heard a dog squealing,” Schneider said.
He says he knew something wasn’t right so he began calling his dogs by name.
“Here Burt, here Barney, here Moe. Come on. Let’s go. And I’m yelling for my dogs and I don’t hear anything,” Schneider said.
He says he went to where he heard the gunshots coming from – his next door neighbors home.
“When I came up the driveway, there’s my three dead dogs laying in his driveway. I was in shock. Totally in shock,” Schneider said.
Schneider says his neighbor shot four of his beagles, killing three of them.
He then called Campbell County Police.
“The police said (to the neighbor) ‘What about these dogs and the guy replied, I shot that one’s leg off.’ Well there’s already three dead dogs laying there. He tried to kill all my dogs,” Schneider said.
“He tried to claim that my dogs were after his chickens. They were chasing a rabbit across his yard. I said I can’t control where a rabbit goes. I said you have called me. I was right on the hill, you could have turned your head and yelled for me.”
Schneider has a copy of the citation he says Campbell County Police issued to the alleged shooter that shows four counts of cruelty to animals.
The citation says that the bodies of the three dead dogs were some distance from the chicken coop and that officers checked the area around the chicken coop for signs for digging or damage but ‘nothing seemed disturbed.’
“He was for whatever reason determined to shot my dogs,” Schneider said.
Schneider says he has never met his neighbor. He says purchased his property in December and has only been living there a few weeks.
“My whole family is afraid to use my farm. I got a beautiful 100-acre farm with a big house, a barn, equipment, everything there and now everyone is scared to go there because of this person and why he did what he did I don’t know. I mean I don’t know. I don’t get it.” Schneider said.
According to the citation and Campbell County court records, the man who is accused of shooting and killing Schneider’s beagles is scheduled to appear in court on February 8.
